      Pororoca

the trucks going   the trucks emptying

sounds of doors closing

company time is a dog straining on its leash

transit of goods down the spinal chord

crunch of gravel   birdsong

rumble of industry a volcano

soon city streets give way to jungle

highways   endless vines

trees grown like witch fingers

water up to their crowns in the tidal bore

pororoca laps against the mangrove trees

open  close  close  open

a valve that clamps the heart’s aorta

the bruised edges of mountains sigh

at their feet fledglings & rodents clamber higher

the ocean is coming   the ocean is coming

they sing in a chorus too alien to hear

too familiar to ignore

too wild in the warmer winds

the brown waters swirl

unnavigable falls    the roar of jet engines

exhaust air   cumulonimbus clouds

boats capsized in the surf

sky birds lying on their backs in pairs

non-human people holding hands

the fish swim ‘round rubber truck tires

circling in place       in the widening blue
